My primary approach towards making work is through painting. These paintings explore botanical imagery, the human form and abstracted designs, with inspiration from anything from house plants to nostalgic TV shows. Creating the abstract and more figurative imagery offers more and more opportunities for me to expand my art practice, and by utilising a variety of mediums to investigate the painted surface, abstract compositions, patterns and forms, I attempt to address materiality within my work.
For years these motifs have recurred throughout my practice, and these repetitions enforce the design and materiality of the works. Mark-making and patterns are treated as freeing intervals between more realistic, and taxing representations. By contrasting chaos and order within my practice, I can consider shared compositions and a common language between styles. For the viewer it should be about ambiguity, interpretation and surprise.
Having graduated from the University of the Creative Arts, Canterbury in 2011, with a BA(hons), I continue to develop my practice in Kent, and have exhibited nationwide.
